Mainland TCM experts exchange views with HK health officials

HONG KONG - A group of medical experts from the Chinese mainland tasked to assist Hong Kong in its COVID-19 fight exchanged views with city health officials and visited a traditional Chinese medicine clinic cum training and research center on Thursday. 

The experts, who arrived in Hong Kong on March 29, visited the Hospital Authority and met with HA Chairman Henry Fan Hung-ling, HA Chief Executive Tony Ko Pat-sing, and other HA officials, according to a government statement issued on Thursday night.

The group is led by Tong Xialoin, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and head researcher of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

They visited the HA on Thursday morning to have a better grasp of anti-pandemic efforts, including the latest progress of various Chinese medicine anti-pandemic services, and share strategies in using Chinese medicine to tackle the virus.

"The mainland Chinese medicine expert group has provided considerable precious experience on the application of Chinese medicine in the treatment for COVID-19 patients,” Fan was quoted as saying in the statement. 

“We will make reference to the mainland experience in integrating Chinese and Western medicine in the treatment, so as to achieve the goal of reducing mortality, critical cases and infections," he added.

Accompanied by HA representatives, the expert group then proceeded to visit the Chinese medicine advice service hotline centre. They exchanged views with the Chinese medicine practitioners on duty there on the operation of the center and about the inquiries made by members of the public.

In the afternoon, the experts visited the Chinese Medicine Clinic cum Training and Research Centre, operated by the Pok Oi Hospital in collaboration with the HA and the Hong Kong Baptist University, in Kowloon City.

The expert group toured the CMCTR and received a briefing by its representatives on the center’s various services, including the Special Chinese Medicine Out-patient Programme and the Chinese Medicine Services for Residential Care Homes for the Elderly program.

The experts were also concerned about the situation of COVID-19 patients and looked into their recovery from the virus in depth. The group also observed Chinese medicine practitioners who were conducting telemedicine consultation with patients.
