BUDAPEST - In a speech before thousands of supporters on Tuesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban displayed confidence in his ability to win a fourth consecutive term in power at the country's general elections on April 3.

"We have to win these elections, and we will triumph," Orban claimed in the speech on Hungary's national holiday, marking the anniversary of the 1848 revolution against the Austrian Empire.

Orban's campaign has so far focused on a fierce anti-immigration and anti-LGBTQ message. However, he has now changed his message to "strategic calmness" in the light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Rather than focusing on historic events, Orban used the occasion to concentrate on the upcoming elections.

"Neither the war, nor the left (the United Opposition) can divert us from our path," he said.

Orban's supporters filled Kossuth square in front of the country's Parliament in Budapest.

His campaign has so far focused on a fierce anti-immigration and anti-LGBTQ message. However, he has now changed his message to "strategic calmness" in the light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Orban accused the opposition, led by Peter Marki-Zay, of wanting to drag Hungary into the conflict, as it has called for soldiers and weapons to be sent to Ukraine.

"We cannot get caught between the Ukrainian anvil and the Russian hammer," Orban said.

He also spoke at length about his government's achievements during the last twelve years, such as the creation of "a million new jobs," the "decrease of the price of utility bills," and "the birth of 200,000 more children than under the reign of the opposition."

Only 19 days remain until the election, Orban emphasized, and the "campaigning shall be done with so much energy that it should hurt."

However, on the other side of the Danube River, the United Opposition had also organized a large rally drawing thousands of supporters.

Orban's Fidesz party is currently leading in the polls.
