HK to promote digitalization in govt management

HONG KONG - Hong Kong will promote digitalization development in government management to provide more comprehensive digital services, the Innovation and Technology Bureau said at a media briefing on Wednesday.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po on Wednesday announced his latest annual budget, which includes moves to enhance the digital economy of the city such as setting up a Digital Economy Development Committee and earmarking HK$600 million (US$76.9 million) for use of e-government audits.

Technology such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and cloud computing could be introduced to different government bureaus and applied to the services provided for citizens, said an official of the Innovation and Technology Bureau

For example, citizens could have robotic chats and search for government policies and receive related services more conveniently on the internet. Intellectual property-related government services such as trademark registration may use blockchain technology to simplify and accelerate the process.

Meanwhile, a Strategic Tech Fund valued at HK$5 billion will be set up by the government to invest in technology enterprises and projects of strategic value to the city, according to the budget.

This movement will have personnel from the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and Cyberport engaged in and identifying local or non-local technology companies with strategic value to Hong Kong and potential investment opportunities that would enrich the city’s innovation and technology ecosystem, the bureau said.
