UN chief condemns Houthi attacks on UAE airport

UNITED NATIONS/BAGHDAD - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday condemned attacks by Yemen's Houthi militia on an airport in the United Arab Emirates.

"The secretary-general condemns today's attacks on Abu Dhabi's International Airport and the nearby industrial area, which reportedly caused several civilian casualties and have been claimed by the Houthis," said Stephane Dujarric, the chief spokesman for Guterres.

"Attacks on civilian infrastructure and civilians are prohibited by international humanitarian law," the spokesman noted.

According to a statement by Abu Dhabi police, Houthi militia claimed responsibility after three petroleum tankers exploded in a fire near the storage facilities of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in Abu Dhabi.

Guterres calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and prevent any escalation amid heightened tensions in the region. There is no military solution to the conflict in Yemen.

The secretary-general urges the parties to engage constructively and without preconditions with his special envoy, Hans Grundberg, and his mediation efforts with the aim to advance the political process to reach a comprehensive negotiated settlement and to end the conflict in Yemen, said the spokesman.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi government also condemned the attacks on oil tankers in the UAE.

A statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry confirmed Iraq's position on "standing against any attack in the region and rejecting escalation," calling for "resolving crises by peaceful means and through negotiations among all concerned parties to achieve security and stability to the region."

The ministry "strongly condemns the attacks on the UAE and targeting oil pipelines," according to the statement.
