HONG KONG - Influential political figures shared their views on the nation’s Constitution and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Basic Law, as the HKSAR held various activities to mark Constitution Day.

The Hong Kong government will facilitate the public’s comprehensive, accurate, and deep understanding of the Constitution, the Basic Law, and the constitutional order established under the law. It’s also vital to stress the importance of “one country”, as it is the root and foundation of “two systems”.

Enhancing education on the Constitution and the Basic Law can help community members grasp the essence of “one country, two systems”, while helping Hong Kong play its unique role in national strategies to build a better future. We all need to gain a proper understanding of the Constitution, which is the foundation of the Basic Law and the principle of “one country, two systems”. A traditional Chinese idiom says that it is only when the root is firm that the branches flourish.

As frontline guardians of national security, every member of the Police Force has an obligation to enhance their understanding of the nation’s Constitution and assist the government in enhancing related public education. Law enforcement officers must abide by the principle of the Constitution stating that loyalty is a source of strength for national security, and must strive to shoulder the sacred responsibility of safeguarding national security.

• Dec 4     Flag-raising ceremonies were held at six disciplined services departments of Hong Kong and various primary and secondary schools

• From Nov 24     RTHK airs successive episodes of its Root & Origin: The Constitution video series, explaining the key points of the Constitution

• Nov 19 to Dec 3     The government’s city-wide quiz design campaign invited students to create questions related to the Constitution and the Basic Law

• Nov 29 to Dec 6     The city-wide online quiz competition is open to all primary and secondary school students
