HONG KONG – Hong Kong reported eight new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, as health authorities confirmed that a freight worker reported as a local untraceable case on Friday was infected with the Delta variant.

The man, who worked at SuperTerminal 1 at the Hong Kong International Airport, was the first local COVID-19 case reported in almost two months.

He carried the L452R mutant strain but remained asymptomatic.

Over the past 14 days, health authorities have received one local infection with unknown sources and 76 imported cases. The overall COVID-19 infection tally in the financial hub stood at 12,261

“The genetic sequencing analysis reveals that the mutant strain belongs to the Delta variant,” a spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health said in a statement.

The spokesman added that the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the department will carry out further genetic sequencing analysis and comparing the genomes of imported cases confirmed recently in Hong Kong involving L452R mutant strain.

All new cases reported on Saturday were imported. They involved three men and three women aged between 21 and 45, a 13-year-old girl as well as a one-year-old boy.

They had traveled to Hong Kong from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Indonesia, and the Philippines, according to the CHP.

They remained asymptomatic. All except the toddler have received at least one dose of the COIVD-19 vaccine.
