BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.47 percent, at 3,447.99 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.41 percent lower at 14,736.92 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.42 trillion yuan (about US$219 billion), down from 1.51 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to biological products and medical equipment led the gains, while those in the photoresist industry suffered losses. 

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.46 percent to close at 3,477.23 points.
