Chinese weightlifter Wang crowned in women's 87kg at Tokyo Olympics

TOKYO - China's Wang Zhouyu pocketed a weightlifting gold medal in women's 87kg at the Tokyo Olympic Games here on Monday.

Wang had her category upgraded from 76kg to 87kg in 2019, and she was the winner at the World Championships in this division in the same year.

It's the sixth gold won by team China from seven categories so far at the Tokyo Olympics.

Failing on her 115kg first snatch attempt, Wang made timely adjustment to lift this weight before improving it to 120kg.

Wang was followed by Crismery Dominga Santana Peguero from the Dominican Republic, who hoisted 116kg.

Wang, also the Asian Championships winner in the 87kg division in 2019 and 2020, succeeded on 150kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 270kg, but failed on a possible new Olympic record of 160kg in her final attempt.

Peguero was unable to continue her momentum going in the clean and jerk, managing 140kg to finish a third-best 256kg.

Tamara Yajaira Salazar Arce from Ecuador came from behind to claim a silver with 263kg.
