Zhuhai to launch mass testing after asymptomatic case found

BEIJING - All residents in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, will undergo a nucleic acid test against coronavirus starting Monday after an asymptomatic carrier was reported early on Monday.

This round of mass testing will conclude on Tuesday, according to the COVID-19 epidemic control authorities of Zhuhai.

The asymptomatic carrier flew in from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, which has reported several COVID-19 cases, to Zhuhai on July 19 and stayed in a hotel in Zhuhai. The person was sent to a quarantine hotel on July 21. The person tested negative against the virus for four times before testing positive on Sunday and was then transferred to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, a trade center, a hotel and two restaurants in Xiangzhou district of Zhuhai were put under a 14-day lockdown on Monday. Some other areas in Xiangzhou were placed under seven-day restrictive management. The city government pledged availability of commodities to those places.

Mainland sees 40 new local cases

The Chinese mainland on Sunday reported 40 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, including 39 in Jiangsu and one in Liaoning, the National Health Commission said in its daily report Monday.

The mainland also reported 36 new imported cases, 18 of which were reported in Yunnan, eight in Guangdong, five in Fujian, two each in Inner Mongolia and Henan, and one in Beijing.

By the end of Sunday, the mainland had reported a total of 92,605 confirmed cases and 87,228 recoveries. The death toll remained at 4,636

No new suspected cases or deaths related to COVID-19 were posted, the commission said. The number of suspected COVID-19 cases stood at two.

There were 741 patients still receiving treatment, 17 of whom were in severe conditions, the commission said.

By the end of Sunday, 7,246 imported cases had been reported with no deaths. In total, the mainland had reported a total of 92,605 confirmed cases and 87,228 recoveries. The death toll remained at 4,636. 

Also on Sunday, 24 new asymptomatic cases were reported. There were a total of 436 asymptomatic cases, of whom 411 were imported, under medical observation.

By the end of Sunday, 11,978 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 212 deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 59 cases in the Macao SAR, and 15,571 cases, including 786 deaths, in Taiwan.

A total of 11,698 COVID-19 patients in the Hong Kong SAR had been discharged from hospitals following recovery, 53 in the Macao SAR, and 12,555 in Taiwan.

More than 1.55 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered on the mainland by Sunday, the commission said.
