Guangdong reports locally transmitted COVID-19 case

NANJING /GUANGZHOU - South China's Guangdong province on Thursday reported a new locally transmitted asymptomatic COVID-19 case.

The asymptomatic carrier, a 23-year-old woman, recently visited the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, where 13 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and nine asymptomatic cases have been reported as of Thursday noon, according to the COVID-19 prevention and control headquarters in Guangdong's city of Zhongshan.

The woman tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Zhongshan early Thursday morning after the city launched screening for people recently returning from high- and medium-risk areas.

The carrier has been sent to a designated hospital for treatment. Authorities in Zhongshan have started contact tracing, disinfected places with high infection risks and are planning to launch citywide mass testing.  

A total of 13 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and nine asymptomatic cases were reported as of 1 pm Thursday in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu province, after new infections emerged at an airport earlier this week.All of them are under quarantine and receiving treatment at designated hospitals and are in stable condition, according to Xu Minsheng from the municipal health commission.

The city launched an all-inclusive nucleic acid testing campaign Wednesday. Medical personnel continued the testing campaign overnight in residential communities. Community workers and volunteers have been mobilized to help maintain order as people queue for tests.

The municipal government has urged residents not to leave the city unless necessary. Anyone leaving the city must produce a negative nucleic acid test certificate issued within 48 hours of their departure. The rule does not apply to transit passengers.
