Failed ‘referendum’ is evidence of political zealots’ desperation
By Staff writer

A “public poll” conducted by a number of opposition labor and student unions over the weekend, designed to rally support for a citywide strike and class boycott to protest against the proposed law on safeguarding national security in the HKSAR, failed to achieve its goal of 60,000 votes, even after its organizers extended the polling by an hour. The organizers, who insisted on calling the poll a “referendum”, have admitted the failure of their maneuver because they got only about 9,000 votes in support of the planned “general strike” and class boycott. Whether it means they will abandon the planned disruptive acts notwithstanding, the result of the poll is further proof the overwhelming majority of Hong Kong society supports the national security legislation being handled by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC).

The fact that some opposition groups went ahead with their so-called “referendum” despite overwhelming condemnation by the public on social media is yet further evidence that the foreign-powers-backed separatists in Hong Kong have completely lost their grip on reality.

Public support for the national security legislation has never been in doubt since the 13th NPC announced last month its decision to authorize its Standing Committee to proceed with the enactment of the proposed law for the HKSAR. A petition to rally public support for the national security legislation collected nearly 3 million individual signatures from local residents in just eight days. Conceivably, the number would have been much bigger had the petition campaign run longer than just eight days. After enduring yearlong violent rampages and vandalism that have taken a huge toll on the city’s economy, social fabric and rule of law, Hong Kong people have realized they are obliged to voice their support for the law, which is the only hope now for stopping toxic political extremism.

The fact that some opposition groups went ahead with their so-called “referendum” despite overwhelming condemnation by the public on social media is yet further evidence that the foreign-powers-backed separatists in Hong Kong have completely lost their grip on reality. Their desperation, as exposed by their latest attempt to fight public will and the sovereign state, suggests these political zealots are on the verge of losing their minds.

It is not at all surprising that the separatists have been so desperate lately, since they know very well the proposed national security law is precisely designed to prevent, stop and punish their attempts to hurt the country. It just so happened that a senior official with the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee explained the main features and more details of the draft national security law in an official statement, published by Xinhua News Agency on Saturday. The explanation answered the most important questions regarding the constitutionality of the draft law. Members of the public are especially pleased by the assurance that the new law ensures they will continue to enjoy all of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Basic Law without any infringement.

Hong Kong society has suffered a great deal of human rights abuse as well as economic losses and social unrest at the hands of the very criminals who are now trying to block the national security law however they can. Nobody in their right mind would ever condone such outrageous behavior, no matter what fancy excuse is presented.
