MADRID - The shadow of the Super League will hover over the midweek round of La Liga matches played on Wednesday and Thursday as Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid continue their three-way battle for the title.

The three clubs are among the 12 founder members of the breakaway Super League which shocked the world of football when it was announced on Sunday and which has received a storm of criticism from the rest of the game in the following hours along with threats of expulsion from La Liga if they continue with their plan.

Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez argued on Spanish TV on Monday night that supporters want to see games between big clubs and his team will be under pressure to justify those words when they visit Cadiz on Wednesday night.

Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the 12 founder members of the breakaway Super League which shocked the world of football when it was announced on Sunday and which has received a storm of criticism from the rest of the game in the following hours along with threats of expulsion from La Liga if they continue with their plan

The club with one of the smallest budgets won away to Real Madrid earlier this season - the sort of embarrassing result the Super League has been created to avoid - and failure to win in the south of Spain would make Perez's claims look rather hollow, especially as the game follows a 0-0 draw against Getafe at the weekend.

That game saw a much-changed Madrid side rest players such as Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Karim Benzema, but they should be back on Wednesday, with Nacho Fernandez and Casemiro both returning from suspension.

Wednesday kicks off with Sevilla looking to continue their late charge towards the title when they visit Levante on the back of an impressive 2-1 win away to Real Sociedad. That win left Sevilla just three points behind Real Madrid and six behind league leaders Atletico Madrid.

Osasuna all but assured their survival by beating Elche on Sunday and they have a mid-table clash against Valencia, while sixth-place Betis are at home to Athletic Club Bilbao.

Athletic return to Seville, just five days after their Copa del Rey defeat to FC Barcelona, and have to lift their morale after that setback against one of the teams they beat on the way to the cup final.

Alaves took three vital points at home to Huesca on Sunday to climb out of the bottom three and now face fifth-place Villarreal in another game that is vital for their efforts to avoid relegation.

Alaves' win saw Valladolid who have a game in hand drop back into the bottom three along with Elche and those two sides face each other in an absolutely vital match for the survival hopes of both teams.

Thursday sees league leaders Atletico Madrid look to build on their 5-0 win at home to Eibar on Sunday when they entertain Huesca, whose positive run of results came to an end against Alaves. Luis Suarez and Joao Felix will both miss out again for Atletico, but Marcos Llorente and Yannick Carrasco showed at the weekend they can make a difference to a sometimes unimaginative Atletico attack.

Barcelona are at home to Getafe in another game in which a would be Superleague member is expected to show their superiority against the sort of rival they apparently don't want to play anymore. Barca's morale is flying after their cup win and coach Ronald Koeman probably won't make too many changes to the team that triumphed at the weekend.
