CBA: Beijing edge Shanxi, Tianjin upset Shenzhen

ZHUJI - The Beijing Royal Fighters beat the Shanxi Loongs 93-85 while the Tianjin Pioneers upset the Shenzhen Aviators 90-83, ending the latter's 5-game winning streak in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league here on Saturday.

Five players of the Beijing Royal Fighters scored double-digit points, led by Joseph Young who notched a game-high 24 points

As Beijing's Zhang Fan made a 3-pointer and Joseph Young hit a mid-range jumper in the crunch, Shanxi's scoring dash in the last quarter led by Ren Junwei's 17 points ended in vain.

Five Beijing players scored double-digit points, led by Young who notched a game-high 24 points. Yu Changdong also contributed 16 points and eight rebounds for Beijing.

Shanxi struggled hard in offense in the first quarter, scoring merely seven points on two field goals and ending the quarter with an embarrassing 7-23 run.

Shanxi gradually found their rhythm in offensive side in the second quarter by fiercely attacking the rim, but Beijing could always make answer balls led by Young and Yu and entered the next half 47-28.

Led by Eric Moreland's layups and Ren's 3-pointer, Shanxi answered their opponents with a 10-0 scoring dash in the last quarter and gradually narrowed the huge deficit. However, they failed to hold off Beijing's outside shootings in the last minutes.

Before the matchup, Tianjin ranked 13th in the league and had missed the chance for the playoffs. However, Tianjin did not lose morale and led the first half 49-42 via good performance on 3-pointer line.

Askia Booker and Shen Zijie helped Shenzhen sneak up on their rivals through fierce attacks in the paint.

However, as Tian Ye and Shi Deshuai created consecutive free-throws in the last minutes, the dogged Tianjin players sealed a hard victory finally.

Also on Saturday, the Shanghai Sharks enjoyed a big win over the Jiangsu Dragons 113-94, the Shandong Heroes sailed past the Sichuan Blue Whales 118-89, the Beijing Ducks thrashed the Nanjing Monkey Kings 119-89, and the Zhejiang Lions trounced the Jilin Northeast Tigers 116-94.
