HONG KONG - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security John Lee Ka-chiu warned on Wednesday of a resurgence of homegrown terrorism and violence in the city, two days after two people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to make explosives.

During the operation on Monday, police seized 23.5 kg of raw materials for making explosives, remote control devices, various weapons and leaflets printed with political slogans. The authorities believe that the suspects were planning to launch an attack during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

While the National Security Law in Hong Kong that took effect in June last year has largely contained street violence and activities of "Hong Kong independence," national security risk still exists and local terrorism could re-emerge at any time, Lee said.

Lee said the Security Bureau has set up a trans-department anti-terrorism team to monitor the external and local situations and enhance its preparedness for possible attacks.
