HK sees 25 new cases, more than 20 test preliminarily positive

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 25 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the lowest daily increase since Jan 6, bringing the city’s overall tally to 10,511.

The new infections included an imported case from Belgium and 24 locally transmitted cases, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Centre for Health Protection’s communicable disease branch, said at a media briefing.

Three workers from a Uniqlo store at Langham Place in Mong Kok were among the confirmed patients, Chuang said. 

All the outlet’s employees who reported for work after Jan 1, including around 20 full-time employees and 50 part-time workers, would undergo mandatory testing.

The cluster related to Hong Kong airport’s third runway project saw five more patients on Tuesday, involving one construction worker and four close contacts, Chuang said.

A resident and a worker at Salvation Army Nam Shan Residence for Senior Citizens in Sham Shui Po were among the new patients, Chuang said. A total of three patients have been infected so far. All residents and workers there will be quarantined, according to Chuang.

Meanwhile, a 78-year-old man became the city’s 183th coronavirus-related fatality on Tuesday morning. The patient was hospitalized on Dec 23 last year and his condition continued to deteriorate before he passed away at the Tuen Mun Hospital, the Hospital Authority’s Chief Manager Sara Ho said at the same briefing.
