US report on security law, ‘one country, two systems’ refuted
By Gang Wen in Hong Kong

The Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administration Region on Friday refuted a US government agency’s report on Hong Kong affairs, stressing that “one country, two systems” is not to be undermined.

In a statement, an office spokesperson said the annual report is “full of lies and bias”.

“A lie told a thousand times is after all still a lie and any clumsy attempt by the US side to hamper ‘one country, two systems’ is futile,” the statement reads.

The report, released by the Congressional Executive Commission on China, claimed that the “one country, two systems” framework in Hong Kong has been “dismantled”, and the National Security Law for Hong Kong was designed to “intimidate and silence” Hong Kong’s civil society.

The spokesperson pointed out that it is a universally recognized truth that the “one country, two systems” policy has been earnestly implemented in Hong Kong since the city’s return to the motherland in 1997.

Yet the report arbitrarily misinterpreted the policy and vilified the central government’s justified efforts to enact the National Security Law in order to safeguard the country’s national security.

The ultimate aim of the report is to undercut “one country, two systems” and undermine China’s sovereignty and security, as well as the interests of all Chinese people, the spokesperson said.

Referring to the 2019 social unrest in Hong Kong, the spokesperson said it is only right and proper for the SAR authorities to combat crime and uphold fairness, justice, and the rule of law.

Ironically, some in the US called those who stormed Capitol Hill in Washington this month “rioters” and “villains”, but those who committed violent crimes in Hong Kong during the often-violent anti-government protests were deemed “peaceful protesters” and “prominent democracy advocates”, the spokesperson said, adding, “It’s an outright application of double standards.”

After hundreds of US protesters stormed the US Capitol building on Jan 6, Secretary of State Mike Pom peo said on Twitter that “lawlessness and rioting — here or around the world — is always unacceptable.”

Yet in November 2019, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that Hong Kong protesters’ “extraordinary outpouring of courage” has “stirred the hearts of all freedom loving people”.

The spokesperson emphasized that the office is firmly against any form of foreign interference in Hong Kong affairs, which are China’s internal affairs.
