Mainland, HK experts exchange views on pandemic situation

HONG KONG - Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government Matthew Cheung Kin-chung on Tuesday led expert advisers and government officials in attending a meeting in Shenzhen to exchange views with mainland experts and officials on the pandemic situation.

HKSAR experts who participated in the meeting included Gabriel Leung, the Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKU); Yuen Kwok-yung, the Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of HKU; and David Hui, the Stanley Ho Professor of Respiratory Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Cheung expressed his gratitude for the central government's staunch support for the HKSAR government's anti-pandemic efforts, which included assistance in the smooth implementation of the Universal Community Testing Programme, construction of community treatment facilities and a temporary hospital, and the agreement to reserve a certain amount of mainland vaccines for use by Hong Kong people when necessary. 

Cheung said that the HKSAR accorded top priority to disease control and would continue to implement the policies on "preventing the importation of cases and the spreading of virus in the community" to stop the pandemic.

The meeting facilitated exchanges between experts from both sides and would be useful to Hong Kong in implementing its anti-virus strategy.

Mainland experts shared their views on the current situation of the pandemic around the world and in the mainland, as well as the strategies and policies to fight COVID-19. 

The experts from both sides also exchanged views on various prevention and control measures, including stopping the importation of cases, virus testing, and the use and management of health codes.

The mainland experts also shared their findings on the research and development of COVID 19 vaccines as well as their use in the mainland.

Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan Siu-chee, Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip Tak-kuen, Secretary for Innovation and Technology Alfred Sit Wing-hang, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai, Director of the Chief Executive's Office Chan Kwok-ki, Vice Minister of the National Health Commission Lei Haichao, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council Huang Liuquan, and Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR Qiu Hong also attended the meeting.
