HK sees 82 new virus cases, including 37 of unknown origin

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 82 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, including 37 infections of unknown origin, the second highest in the current wave of infections following Sunday’s 41 untraceable cases.

In addition to five imported cases, Monday’s caseload also included 40 cases linked to previous patients, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Centre for Health Protection’s communicable disease branch, said at a press briefing.

The city’s tally of confirmed infections stood at 7,623. Chuang said there were also more than 60 people who tested preliminarily positive for the virus.

Two new patients were linked to the city’s biggest cluster that originated from dance clubs, which now involve more than 720 patients.

The new patients also included a cleaner at Conrad Nursing Home in San Po Kong who developed symptoms on Saturday, as well as a resident at Hung To For Then Home in Kowloon City, Chuang said.

Two more patients were residents of Tung Tau Estate Kwai Tung House in Wong Tai Sin, increasing the building’s tally to nine cases, Chuang said. Its residents will be subject to mandatory testing.

Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man with chronic illnesses died at United Christian Hospital on Monday morning, becoming the city’s 118th coronavirus patient to succumb to the disease, Hospital Authority Chief Manager Linda Yu said at the same briefing.
