GENEVA - The Office of the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Syria on Tuesday urged strengthened political efforts to end the decade-long conflict in war-torn Syria.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee was officially launched in Geneva on Oct 30, 2019

Jenifer Fenton, spokesperson for the UN office, told a press briefing here that the ongoing session of the so-called Small Body of the Syrian Constitutional Committee will last until Dec 4.

"In this regard, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O Pedersen, had expressed the hope that with the relative calm in Syria, it should be possible to focus more deeply on the political process and all the elements of Security Council Resolution 2254," she said. This resolution sets a timetable for talks and a ceasefire that was never met.

She also said that in the current COVID-19 situation, the safety and security of the staff and the committee members were the office's top priority.

The fourth round of talks on a new constitution for Syria, which is expected to pave the way for a political solution to the conflict in the country, kicked off here on Monday.

According to the UN, a fifth session has been agreed to be held in January, which will focus on the basic principles of the new constitution.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee -- which brings together representatives of the Syrian government, the opposition and civil society -- was officially launched in Geneva on Oct 30, 2019.

The committee's Small Body met here in August this year, without making any major progress. The Small Body includes 45 delegates, 15 each from the three groups.
