Over 130 US Secret Service agents 'in quarantine' over virus

WASHINGTON / ADDIS ABABA / MINSK / RIO DE JANEIRO / SANTIAGO / PARIS / BERLIN / ACCRA / TRIPOLI / RABAT / LISBON / MOSCOW / STOCKHOLM / PRAGUE - More than 130 US Secret Service agents are quarantining or isolating due to COVID-19 cases, a report from The Washington Post said on Friday.

They all either have tested positive for the coronavirus or have been in contact with someone who tested positive, said the report, citing three people familiar with the service.

The outbreak among the Secret Service is thought to be linked to President Donald Trump's final blitz of campaign rallies in the last three days before the Nov 3 Election Day, according to the report.

The United States reported an all-time high of nearly 200,000 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, setting a new record for the fifth time in a week, data updated Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show.

Brazil on Friday reported 456 deaths from COVID-19, raising the nationwide death toll to 164,737

The new daily case count of 194,610 refreshed the previous nationwide record of 143,408 cases set on the previous day, pushing the seven-day average daily increase to a record high of 132,442 cases, according to the latest CDC data.

The United States has recorded more than 10,707,000 cases with more than 244,100 related deaths as of Friday evening, according to the real-time count kept by Johns Hopkins University. 

Africa

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the African continent has reached 1,930,981 with a death toll of 46,505 as of Friday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

A total of 1,634,235 people infected with COVID-19 have recovered across the continent so far, according to the continental disease control and prevention agency.

Belarus

Belarus reported 1,167 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking its total to 111,622, according to the country's health ministry.

There have been 727 new recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 93,570, the ministry added.

So far, 1,133 people have died of the disease in the country, including six over the past 24 hours, it said.

Belgium

Belgium reported more deaths from the coronavirus, bringing the total to 14,106. Another 513 people were admitted to hospital, up from 399 the day before.

The number of patients in intensive care rose to 1,457, an increase of 5. The 14-day virus incidence rate is falling since the introduction of lockdown measures last month, down to 1,104 per 100,000.

Brazil

Brazil on Friday reported 456 deaths from COVID-19, raising the nationwide death toll to 164,737.

Meanwhile, the Latin American country registered 29,070 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the accumulated national caseload to 5,810,652.

Brazil has the world's second-highest COVID-19 death toll, following the United States, and the third most COVID-19 cases, after the United States and India.  

Chile

Chile detected 1,592 new daily cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, bringing its accumulated caseload to 528,030, the Ministry of Health said Friday.

In the same day, 39 more patients died from the disease, raising the death toll to 14,738 deaths since the start of the pandemic in the South American country.

France

France reported 932 lives lost to COVID-19 on Friday, the highest single-day death number since mid-April, while new cases and hospital admissions dwindled, a sign that reinforced curbs on people's movement are starting to work.

Now the total of deaths from COVID-19 reached 43,892, with nursing home accounting for nearly one third of the fatalities, health authorities said.

Some 23,794 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, down from 33,172 on Thursday and much lower compared with the all-time high of 60,486 reported a week ago. The cumulative number of cases totals 1,922,504, ranking now fourth in the world, behind the United States, India and Brazil.

Germany

Germany on Friday reported a new record of 23,542 COVID-19 infections within one day, bringing the national tally to 751,095, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

The number of deaths related to COVID-19 increased by 218 to a total of 12,200, said the RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention.

Ghana

The caseload of COVID-19 in Ghana increased to 50,018 with 61 new cases confirmed on Friday, said the Ghana Health Service.

The number of recovered cases reached 48,179 while 320 deaths were recorded, according to the latest update.

Libya

The National Center for Disease Control of Libya on Friday reported 824 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the national tally to over 72,000.

Of 3,864 suspected samples it received, 824 were tested positive, the center said in a statement, adding that 556 patients have recovered while 10 others died.

A total of 72,628 has so far been reported nationwide with 43,256 recoveries and 995 fatalities, said the center.

Mexico

Mexico reported 5,558 new coronavirus cases, taking the total to 997,393, according to data released by the Health Ministry Friday. Deaths rose 568 to 97,624.

Morocco

Morocco registered 5,515 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total tally in the North African country to 282,336, the health ministry said in a statement.

It also reported 61 new deaths from the coronavirus, raising the death toll in Morocco to 4,631.

Portugal

Portugal on Friday recorded 6,653 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a 24-hour span, bringing the country's cumulative number of infections to 204,664 since the outbreak of the epidemic.

A further 69 people had died from COVID-19 in the 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,250, according to Friday's data by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) of Portugal.

Russia

Russia reported on Saturday a record daily increase of 22,702 new coronavirus infections, taking the national tally to 1,903,253.

Authorities also reported 391 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the official death toll to 32,834.

Sweden

Sweden's COVID-19 infection rate significantly exceeds that of its Nordic neighbors, with the number of new confirmed cases per capita now ten times higher than in Finland, almost four times higher than in Norway and twice as high as in Denmark.

The figures, cited by the Aftonbladet newspaper on Friday, were recorded on Nov. 10 by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

In terms of reported cases per million citizens, Sweden now ranks 25th in Europe. The country registered 5,990 new COVID-19 cases and 42 coronavirus-related deaths between Thursday and Friday alone, Sweden's Public Health Agency said.

The Czech Republic

The Czech Republic reported 7,357 new coronavirus cases for Nov 13 as daily infections continued to hold below recent peaks after weeks of tightened measures to combat the spread, Health Ministry data showed on Saturday.

The country of 10.7 million has faced one of Europe’s highest infection rates of COVID-19. Hospitals have been under heavy strain.

The ministry on Saturday reported 171 new deaths, including 104 on Friday and revisions to previous days, to bring the total to 5,926 - a 25 percent increase in the last week and a tenfold rise since Sept 25.

In total, 454,030 people have been infected since the pandemic started, including a three-fold increase just in the past month. Friday’s daily total marked the first seven-day period since the first half of October that the country went a week with daily infections below 10,000.
