Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce marks centennial

HONG KONG – Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce announced on Thursday to roll out a series of activities to help the underprivileged in Hong Kong and revive the city’s economy as the chamber celebrated its 100th anniversary.

In a press conference to mark its centennial, the chamber's President Wong Shu-yui announced that the activities will revolve around the theme of "Gratitude, Inheritance, Unity and Dedication," with the aim of giving back to society.

The chamber will gather the strength of its members and Chiu Chow natives to actively participate in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and support innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth, according to a press release issued by the chamber.

Wong said he hopes, by holding a series of celebrative activities, the chamber can unite people in Hong Kong to fight the COVID-19 epidemic and to restore Hong Kong’s economy.

"As a century-old chamber, Hong Kong Chiu Chow of Commerce must adapt to the new normal, seize the current major historical opportunity and strive for new achievements," the press release quoted Wong as saying.

Among those who officiated the conference were Bernard Chan Pak-li, deputy director of the Hong Kong government's Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, and Jack Chan Jick-chi, deputy director of the Home Affairs Bureau.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and the chamber's honorary president Li Ka-shing have respectively sent handwritten banners to extend their congratulations to the chamber.

Established in 1921, Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce aimed to explore business opportunities to promote international trade. It is also a strong promoter of public welfare and has made contributions to the educational and cultural development in Hong Kong over the years.
