Turkey quake toll rises to 114, rescue ends

ISTANBUL - Search and rescue efforts have ended in Turkey's western city of Izmir as the the death toll from Friday's earthquake in the Aegean Sea rose to 114, disaster authorities said on Wednesday.

Two of the victims were teenagers on the Greek island of Samos, authorities said, Reuters reports.

A total of 1,035 people were injured in the quake, with 137 still being treated in hospitals, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said in a statement.

Mehmet Gulluoglu, the head of AFAD, announced on his Twitter account that rescue efforts had been completed in all the 17 collapsed buildings in Izmir.

Previously, authorities had said a total of 107 people were pulled out alive from the ruins.

Izmir Mayor Tunc Soyer launched an aid campaign on Tuesday dubbed "One Rent One Home" for those whose apartment buildings had collapsed or were heavily damaged.

Those who want to provide rental support or open their homes for citizens who are in need can submit their notifications online, he said in a written statement.

"Five hours after we announced the campaign, we received over 2 million Turkish liras (approximately US$235,000) of rent support," Soyer announced on his Twitter account.

"We have retrieved 200 families from staying in tents thanks to this amount," he added.

Currently, there are 8,000 temporary shelters established across the province for the earthquake survivors.

According to the AFAD statement, the government has allocated 29 million liras of resources to the region.

A 6.6-magnitude strong earthquake hit the Aegean Sea off the Seferihisar district of Izmir on Friday.
