BRUSSELS - The Chinese Mission to the European Union (EU) on Tuesday upheld the actions by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) police to arrest several alleged political activists over the weekend, reacting to an EU statement claiming to "closely follow" the cases.

"China is a country under the rule of law, and Hong Kong of China is a society under the rule of law. Everyone is equal before the law, and no one shall be above the law," said a spokesperson for the mission.

"The Hong Kong SAR police enforce the law in accordance with the law and will not allow any interference by anyone," stressed the spokesperson, adding that Hong Kong's judicial affairs brook no external interference.

The European External Action Service, the EU's diplomatic wing, made a statement Monday on the recent arrests of several so-called "pro-democracy" lawmakers and former lawmakers by the Hong Kong police, stating that they would "closely follow" the treatment of relevant cases.
