Hong Kong political heavyweights and entrepreneurs have high hopes for the central government’s latest development blueprint, which reaffirms the nation’s commitment to maintaining the prosperity and stability of the special administrative region.

If Hong Kong can better leverage its unique strengths in the Bay Area’s future technological development, the city will have a lot of room for development in the next five years, and also more opportunities for young people.

Their remarks on the much-anticipated proposals for the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 were made after the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC passed the proposed plans on Thursday.

Tam Yiu-chung, Hong Kong’s delegate on the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, said the proposal shows the importance the central authorities attach to maintaining the Asian financial hub’s prosperity and stability, an aspiration shared by every Hong Kong resident.

It is extremely likely that the central government will roll out more favorable policies in the near future to revive the city’s coronavirus-stricken economy, he added.

Lau Siu-kai, vice-chairman of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, said the proposal is a sign that more effort will be made to integrate Hong Kong into the national development plan and reboot its economy, after the implementation of the National Security Law for Hong Kong on June 30 helped to restore law and order.

Lau Ka-keung, chairman of Hong Kong United Youth Association, said he anticipated that the new five-year plan will offer myriad opportunities for local youths in key areas such as 5G technology, semiconductors, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, all of which were included.

Lau expressed the hope that many aspirational Hong Kong young people seize this opportunity to understand the nation’s innovation strategies and broaden their horizons.

Gordon Lam Chi-wing, board executive director of cosmetics retailer Bonjour, said he has high expectations for the upcoming plan, as it guides the country and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s development in the next five years.

“If Hong Kong can better leverage its unique strengths in the Bay Area’s future technological development, the city will have a lot of room for development in the next five years, and also more opportunities for young people,” Lam said.

Cathy Jim Ka-wai, director of RHT Industries and founder of medical grade air purifier b-MOLA, agrees. She said Hong Kong has certain advantage in innovative technologies, but there is room for deeper collaboration between the city and the Chinese mainland in streamlining business and trade, as well as innovation and technology.

With such collaboration in place, Jim expressed confidence that her business ventures will be a success.
