MOSCOW - Moscow will respond to new sanctions from the European Union over the alleged poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, TASS news agency reported on Thursday, citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

This statement came after the EU on Thursday imposed new sanctions on Russia, targeting six Russian officials

"Much to our regret, this is a deliberate unfriendly step against Russia. The Council of the EU harmed relations with our country by making this decision," Peskov said.

Navalny became unwell on a flight from Russian city Tomsk to Moscow on Aug 20, with the plane making an emergency landing in the city of Omsk.

He reportedly fell into a coma after being hospitalized in Omsk and was later transferred to Germany for treatment.
