HK reports 69 new virus cases as local transmissions stay high

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 69 new coronavirus cases on Monday, of which 67 were locally transmitted, as authorities battled to contain a resurgence of the virus over the last six weeks.

Starting from Tuesday, the COVID-19 testing service for taxi and public light bus drivers will be extended to employees of the ferry operators, the MTR Corporation and Hong Kong Tramways

Since late January, over 4,000 people have been infected in Hong Kong, 55 of whom have died. On Sunday, Hong Kong reported 72 new cases.

Among the 67 cases reported on Monday, 22 has no known origins, health officials said at a press briefing in the afternoon.

The latest three patients to succumb to the disease were aged between 85 and 94. They died Monday morning after their condition deteriorated, according to the city's Hospital Authority.

The city's Transport Department that starting from Tuesday, the COVID-19 testing service for taxi and public light bus drivers will be extended to employees of the ferry operators, the MTR Corporation and Hong Kong Tramways.

The new infections brought the infection tally in the financial hub to 4,148.

Hong Kong's Hospital Authority said there are still 1,052 patients in hospitals, with nearly 100 in serious conditions, while more than 2,900 patients had been discharged after recovery.
