Hong Kong police arrest 5 for illegal gatherings

HONG KONG - Hong Kong police arrested five people for illegal gatherings in Yuen Long on Tuesday, with some suspected of breaching the National Security Law, and another 96 participants of the assemblies were summoned.

Protesters gathered in Yuen Long MTR station and the surrounding shopping malls from Tuesday afternoon, and one of them displayed a sign bearing a slogan, police said in a statement, stressing that those involved are suspected of violating the prohibition of group gatherings and the National Security Law in Hong Kong.

Police officers had to take law enforcement action as some protesters ignored warnings and continued their unlawful acts.

Four men and one woman were arrested for offenses including breaching the National Security Law, obstructing police officers and violating curfew bail conditions. The arrestees included a member of the District Council and a member of the Legislative Council.

Police said that such group gatherings are unlawful and increase the risk of infections of COVID-19 and vowed continued efforts to take resolute action to enforce the law and ensure public safety.
