Struggling Alaves sack coach Garitano

MADRID La Liga strugglers Deportivo Alaves sacked coach Asier Garitano on Sunday, the club confirmed on its official website.

The sacking of the former Leganes and Real Sociedad coach came the day after Alaves slipped to their fifth consecutive defeat with a 1-0 loss to Valladolid.

Alaves have won one and lost six of their seven games since the return of football in Spain, dropping from a comfortable mid-table position to being in danger of relegation

Alaves have won one and lost six of their seven games since the return of football in Spain, dropping from a comfortable mid-table position to being in danger of relegation.

The result leaves the team from Vitoria (northern Spain) 15th on the league table with a six-point cushion over the relegation zone with four difficult games remaining this season.

Alaves have yet named Garitano's replacement, saying on their website they will do so as soon as possible.

Whoever is named as Garitano's replacement will have a tough first game in charge as their next game is away to league leaders Real Madrid on Friday night.
