BERLIN —  Bayern Munich moved one step closer to their eighth straight league title after Leon Goretzka's late goal helped them beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 in the 31st round of Bundesliga matches on Saturday.

The Bavarians had to play without their top striker Robert Lewandowski and leading assist provider Thomas Muller, but the German record champions created the first chance of the game when Michael Cuisance's volley just missed the target with 11 minutes into the match.

Monchengladbach had grabbed the perfect start in the 16th minute, but Jonas Hofmann's goal was ruled offside after consultation with the video assistant referee.

As the match progressed, both sides traded attacks as Lucas Hernandez failed to beat Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer from promising position in the 22nd minute, while Breel Embolo tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer from close range three minutes later.

Bayern eventually broke the deadlock as Joshua Zirkzee made the most of Sommer's misplaced pass to slot home into an open goal in the 26th minute.

Monchengladbach responded well and leveled the scores 11 minutes later when Benjamin Pavard cleared Patrick Herrmann's square pass into his own goal.

After the break, the Foals took the reins and kept Neuer busy as the German international goalkeeper had to be on guard to deny Lars Stindl and Herrmann.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick reacted to Monchengladbach's momentum and brought on Kingsley Coman and Alphonso Davies.

As a result, the Bavarians gained the upper hand again and created a chance through Serge Gnabry, whose deflected shot on target forced Sommer to make a diving save.

It looked like Marco Rose's men would secure a point on the road, but Bayern had the last laugh as Pavard made up for his own goal by assisting Goretzka's winner in the dying minutes.

With their tenth victory in a row, Bayern now need just one more win to lift the 2019/20 Bundesliga title, whereas fourth-placed Monchengladbach slide away from the top three after suffering their ninth defeat of the season.

"It was a tough game. We had to change a lot but we were able to keep our advantage atop the standings," Flick said.

"We lost today because we did not take our chances, and because Bayern is Bayern. They always believe in their ability to win and keep the pace until the final whistle," rued Monchengladbach coach Rose.

The Bundesliga's 31st round of matches conclude on Sunday with Mainz hosting Augsburg while struggling Schalke 04 take on Bayer Leverkusen.
