Beijing sees first local COVID-19 case in 56 days

BEIJING - A local case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Beijing's Xicheng district on Thursday after the capital saw no newly reported cases for 56 successive days, according to the municipal government.

The case involves a 52-year-old man surnamed Tang. Wearing a mask, Tang had gone to the hospital alone by bicycle wearing a mask on Wednesday afternoon after feeling cold and exhausted. He had no cough or congestion at that time.

The 52-year-old patient had not been out of Beijing during the past two weeks and he had no close contact with people from other cities

His coronavirus test results came back positive on Thursday, said Miao Jianhong, deputy head of Xicheng district. 

Tang had not been out of Beijing during the past two weeks and he had no close contact with people from other cities. Two of Tang's family members are now under medical observation while the residential community where he lives has been closed-off. 

The district will trace back places where Tang had been to and collect samples and carry out disinfection operations.

Mainland sees 11 new cases on Wednesday

Earlier in the day, the National Health Commission said that 11 new COVID-19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland Wednesday, adding that all of them were imported, including six in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, one in Tianjin and one in Fujian.

No new cases of local transmission were reported on the mainland, according to a daily report issued by the National Health Commission.

No deaths related to the disease or new suspected cases were reported Wednesday, according to the report.

On Wednesday, four people were discharged from hospitals after recovery.

Out of the 11 imported cases, six were reported in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, one in Tianjin and one in Fujian, the National Health Commission said

As of Wednesday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 83,057, including 62 patients who were still being treated, with no one in severe condition.

Altogether, 78,361 people had been discharged after recovery and 4,634 people had died of the disease, the commission said.

By Wednesday, the Chinese mainland had reported a total of 1,797 imported cases. Out of those cases, 1,736 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while and 61 remained hospitalized, with no one in severe condition. No deaths from imported cases had been reported. There is currently one suspected case, the commission said.

According to the commission, 3,179 close contacts were still under medical observation after 358 people were released from medical observation Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, four new asymptomatic cases, of which three were imported, were reported on the mainland. One asymptomatic case was re-categorized as aconfirmed case. A total of 29 asymptomatic cases, including four imported cases, were released from medical observation.

The commission said 129 asymptomatic cases, including 45 imported cases, were still under medical observation.

Hubei

No new confirmed, asymptomatic or suspected COVID-19 cases were reported in central China's Hubei province on Wednesday, the provincial health commission said Thursday.

There were 42 asymptomatic cases under medical observation after 21 such cases were released from quarantine on Wednesday.

By Wednesday, Hubei had reported a total of 68,135 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 4,512 deaths, and 63,623 recoveries.

HK, Macao, Taiwan

By Wednesday, 1,107 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 443 in Taiwan, including seven deaths.

A total of 1,051 patients in the Hong Kong SAR, 45 in the Macao SAR, and 431 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
