BERLIN - Misinterpretations seem inevitable when Lucien Favre tries to explain his side's performances. Born in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, the 62-year-old isn't what you call a master of the German language.

His statements after the frustrating 1-0 defeat against national rival Bayern Munich again might have been interpreted in the wrong way. By committing to answering speculations about his future in a few weeks, the Dortmund coach triggered a new fatal debate.

Dortmund's leaders might not be entirely happy with Favre, as he is not of the type of a go-getter. But as long as no convincing replacement option is around, hesitant Favre won't be sacked

12 hours later, Favre said he intends to fulfill his three-year contract with the Blacks and Yellows until 2021, but couldn't ease the tensions entirely.

Investigating the club's deeper problems, Favre might only be a side-effect. Debates have raged since coaching icon Juergen Klopp left in 2015.

When eying a suitable coach, the club's timing continuously seemed unfortunate. After failed attempts with Thomas Tuchel (Paris) and Peter Bosz (Leverkusen), Julian Nagelsmann (Leipzig) wasn't available; and neither is Marco Rose (Moenchengladbach).

Dortmund's leaders might not be entirely happy with Favre, as he is not of the type of a go-getter. But as long as no convincing replacement option is around, hesitant Favre won't be sacked.

Both Dortmund and their manager have to live with their unfulfilled desire to get more out of a talented squad and challenge the country's number one Bayern.

Mentioned Niko Kovac is said to be no hot topic.

After the significant setback in the race for the 2020 national title, Dortmund is facing another untitled season. Despite a gifted and expensive squad, the Westphalians failed in the German Cup and the Champions League.

It seems the BVB is well-advised to win a title soon to continue to attract young talents, close the gap to Bayern, and not to be forced to sell players.

By announcing wanting to win the national title this season, the club officials increased the team and coach's pressure. Now they need to deal with the disappointment of not having reached their goals. The same applies to the European stage after the BVB spoke about wanting to play a significant role in the Champions League.
