China plans nucleic acid testing for all overseas arrivals

BEIJING/CHANCHUN/WUHAN/HARBIN/SHANGHAI - Nucleic acid testing should cover all inbound personnel and those involved in transferring inbound travelers, a Chinese health official said Monday.

Prevention measures, including closed-loop management, should be strengthened to prevent cases transmitted locally in light of the evolving situation overseas as people-to-people exchanges and economic cooperation may increase, Mi Feng, spokesperson for the National Health Commission, said at a press conference.

Mi's remarks came as the commission said Monday it received reports of seven newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Sunday, of which four were imported cases reported in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Three cases were transmitted domestically, with two reported in Jilin province and one in Shanghai, the commission said in its daily report.

For the two cases in Jilin, reported in the city of Jilin, the cases were close contacts of earlier confirmed cases, local health authorities said.

As for the other case in Shanghai, the infected patient is a job seeker from the city of Qianjiang, central China's Hubei province, who came to Shanghai on May 14. On May 15, he voluntarily went to a medical institution to apply for a serological test and results showed that he had tested positive for the virus.

He was isolated on the same day and started to show symptoms during the period. On May 17, he was given a nucleic acid test by the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the result was positive.

A total of 20 people in close contact with the patient in Shanghai have been tracked and put under isolated observation. All places where the patient had visited have been disinfected.

Meanwhile, the commission said one suspected case from abroad was also reported in Shanghai.

No deaths related to the disease were reported on Sunday, according to the commission.

On Sunday, 11 people were discharged from hospitals after recovery, while the number of severe cases dropped by two to eight.

As of Sunday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 82,954, including 82 patients who were still being treated, and 78,238 people who had been discharged after recovery.

Altogether, 4,634 people had died of the disease, the commission said.

By Sunday, the mainland had reported a total of 1,704 imported cases. Among those cases, 1,659 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 45 remained hospitalized with two in severe conditions. No deaths from imported cases had been reported.

The commission said four people, all from overseas, were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

According to the commission, 4,970 close contacts were still under medical observation after 246 people were released from medical observation Sunday.

Also on Sunday, 18 new asymptomatic cases, including two from abroad, were reported on the mainland. No cases were re-categorized as confirmed ones, and 85 asymptomatic cases, including one from overseas, were released from medical observation.

The commission said 448 asymptomatic cases, including 31 from overseas, were still under medical observation.

Jilin

Other than the two newly confirmed COVID-19 cases transmitted locally, there were no new reports of asymptomatic cases in Jilin on Sunday, according to the provincial health commission.

There were still 22 patients receiving treatment in hospital, all in the city of Jilin, and 1,117 close contacts of locally transmitted cases under medical observation.

Shanghai

In Shanghai, the municipal health commission said a total of 326 imported cases had been reported in Shanghai by Sunday. Among them, 17 patients remain in hospital for treatment with one in critical condition. Four suspected cases are still under screening.

The municipality has so far reported 340 confirmed cases transmitted locally by Sunday, including seven deaths.

Hubei

No new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in Hubei Sunday, the provincial health commission said Monday.

By Sunday, Hubei still has six confirmed COVID-19 cases, all in the provincial capital of Wuhan, including one in severe condition and one in critical condition.

The province reported 14 new asymptomatic cases Sunday while 77 were released from quarantine. The total number of such cases under medical observation was 337 by Sunday.

There were zero reports of newly confirmed cases in Hubei and Heilongjiang on Sunday, local health authorities said

A total of 283,589 close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the province had been tracked by Sunday, 828 of whom were still under medical observation.

Hubei has so far reported 68,134 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 50,339 in Wuhan. By Sunday, the death toll stood at 4,512, including 3,869 in Wuhan.

Heilongjiang

There were zero reports of newly confirmed cases and asymptomatic cases in northeast China's Heilongjiang province on Sunday, the provincial health commission said Monday.

As of Sunday, Heilongjiang still has four asymptomatic cases. A total of 19,837 close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the province had been tracked, and 636 people were still undergoing medical observation.

Heilongjiang has been cleared of confirmed COVID-19 cases after the last patient was discharged from hospital after recovery on Saturday.

The province had reported a total of 559 cases transmitted locally and 386 imported cases by Sunday.

HK, Macao, Taiwan

Meanwhile by Sunday, 1,055 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 440 in Taiwan, including seven deaths.

A total of 1,024 patients in Hong Kong, 44 in Macao, and 395 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
