Health official wary of risk from sporadic infections in China

BEIJING/WUHAN/CHANCHUN/HARBIN - China's risk of COVID-19 cluster infections caused by sporadic cases cannot be ignored although the epidemic is in a generally stable state in the country at the moment, a health official said Wednesday.

The six newly reported confirmed cases transmitted domestically on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday were all related to previous cluster infections, said Song Shuli, a spokesperson for the National Health Commission, at a press conference in Beijing.

"We need to stay alert and put in place measures for regular epidemic response to resolutely prevent new outbreaks," she said. 

The commission said Wednesday that it received reports of seven newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday, of which one was an imported case reported in Shanghai.

The other six cases were domestically transmitted in Jilin province, the commission said in its daily report. The cases were all close contacts of earlier confirmed cases in the city, local health authorities said.

One new suspected case transmitted domestically in Jilin was also reported.

No deaths related to the disease were reported Tuesday on the mainland, according to the commission.

On Tuesday, 18 people were discharged from hospitals after recovery. 

As of Tuesday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 82,926, including 104 patients who were still being treated with 10 in severe conditions, and 78,189 people who had been discharged after recovery. 

Altogether, 4,633 people had died of the disease, the commission said.

By Tuesday, the mainland had reported a total of 1,692 imported cases. Out of those cases, 1,628 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 64 remained hospitalized with three in severe conditions. No deaths from the imported cases had been reported.

The commission said four people, including three from abroad, were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

According to the commission, 5,317 close contacts were still under medical observation after 455 people were released from medical observation Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, eight new asymptomatic cases including one from abroad were reported on the mainland. No cases were re-categorized as confirmed cases, and 18 asymptomatic cases, including two from overseas, were released from medical observation.

The commission said 750 asymptomatic cases, including 37 from overseas, were still under medical observation.


Jilin

Jilin province has reported a total of 114 confirmed cases transmitted locally as of Tuesday, including one death and 92 recoveries, according to the provincial health commission.

A total of 367 close contacts of the locally transmitted confirmed cases in the province are now under medical observation.

Hubei

No new confirmed cases were reported in central China's Hubei province Tuesday, the provincial health commission said Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, the province has 598 asymptomatic cases under medical observation, after six such cases were added and 14 were released from quarantine Tuesday.

Six patients remained in hospital in the province, with one in severe and one in critical condition.

A total of 283,260 close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the province had been tracked by Tuesday, 932 of whom were still under medical observation.

There were no new reports of confirmed cases in the provinces of Hubei and Heilongjiang on Tuesday, according to local health authorities

Hubei had so far reported 68,134 confirmed COVID-19 cases in total, including 50,339 in Wuhan. By Tuesday, the death toll in the province stood at 4,512, including 3,869 in Wuhan.

Heilongjiang

There were no new reports of confirmed COVID-19 cases in northeast China's Heilongjiang province on Tuesday, the provincial health commission said Wednesday.

By Tuesday, the province had reported a total of 559 confirmed cases transmitted locally and 386 imported cases. A total of 543 patients who were infected by domestic transmission and all of the 386 patients that were categorized as imported cases had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.

The province still has three confirmed cases and five asymptomatic cases, according to the commission.

As of Tuesday, a total of 1,026 close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the province were still under medical observation.

HK, Macao, Taiwan

By Tuesday, 1,047 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 440 in Taiwan including seven deaths.

A total of 991 patients in Hong Kong, 42 in Macao, and 372 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
