Thailand extends ban on flights to end of June

BANGKOK / NEW DELHI / JERUSALEM / KUWAIT CITY / RAMALLAH / DUBAI / MANILA / DUBAI / ANKARA / SEOUL / ADEN / - Thailand has extended a ban on international passenger flights again for another month until June 30 in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Kuwait on Saturday reported 942 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 13,802 and the death toll to 107, the health ministry said

"No passenger flights originating outside the country may land at Thai airports until June 30. The exceptions are state or military aircraft, emergency or technical landing, humanitarian aid, medicine and relief flights, repatriation and cargo aircraft," said the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand on its website on Saturday night.

Thailand reported three additional cases of the new coronavirus, bringing its total cases to 3,028 as the country relaxes local restrictions and re-opens malls and department stores.

The three new cases, detected in state quarantine, were students returning from overseas, one from Pakistan and two from Egypt, a spokesman for the government’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration, Taweesin Wisanuyothin, said on Sunday.

Thailand has reported a total of 56 deaths and 116 patients were still being treated.

2,856 patients have recovered.

India

India's federal health ministry Sunday morning reported 120 new deaths from COVID-19, and 4987 positive cases since Saturday in the country, taking the number of deaths to 2,872 and total cases to 90,927.

This is the highest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases in the country.

"As on 8:00 am (local time) Sunday, 2,872 deaths related to novel Coronavirus have been recorded in the country," read information released by the ministry.

On Saturday morning the number of COVID-19 cases in the country was 85,940, and the death toll was 2,752.

According to ministry officials, so far 34,109 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.

"The number of active cases in the country right now is 53,946," read the information.

Sunday marks the 54th straight day of the ongoing lockdown across the country announced by the central government to contain the spread of the pandemic.

The lockdown, announced on March 25, was again extended for the second time on May 1 until May 17. The fourth phase is scheduled to begin from Monday.

Israel

Israel's Ministry of Health reported 19 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, bringing the total cases to 16,608.

One of the new patients is an educational staff member at an elementary school in the central city of Rehovot.

As a result, the school has been closed until May 27, and 52 pupils from two classes, as well as staff members, were instructed to undergo home quarantine until that date.

An elementary school employee in the coastal city of Tel Aviv was also tested positive, and as a result, a teacher and seven pupils have entered home quarantine.

According to the ministry, the number of victims increased from 266 to 268, while the number of patients in serious condition decreased from 60 to 59, out of 177 patients currently hospitalized.

The number of recoveries reached 12,855, with 268 new recoveries, while the number of active cases dropped to 3,485, the lowest number of active cases in Israel since March 27.

Kuwait

Kuwait on Saturday reported 942 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 13,802 and the death toll to 107, the health ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 9,852 patients are receiving treatment, including 169 in ICU, according to the statement.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 203 more patients, raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 3,843.

Palestine

Palestine on Saturday confirmed a new coronavirus case in the southern West Bank district of Hebron, raising the total number of cases in Palestinian territories to 555.

The latest case is a Palestinian worker, who lives in Beit Ula village near Hebron and returned from his work in Israel three days ago, according to a statement by Palestine's Health Minister Mai al-Kaila.

The number of recovered COVID-19 cases has increased to 443, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Philippines

The Philippines’ Department of Health on Sunday reported 208 new cases of coronavirus infections and seven more fatalities.

The Southeast Asian country’s total confirmed cases have risen to 12,513, most of which are in the capital Manila, while its death toll has climbed to 824. The number of recoveries has reached 2,635, the health department said in a bulletin.

Qatar

Qatar reported on Saturday another 1,547 cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed infections to more than 30,000.

With a population of about 2.7 million people, the energy-rich Gulf state has one of the world’s highest per capita number of confirmed cases.

The latest health ministry report on confirmed cases took the total to 30,972, according to figures published on the ministry’s website. One more person died, bringing the death toll to 15.

Only about 300,000 of Qatar’s population are Qatari nationals and the coronavirus outbreak has affected mainly migrant workers, according to human right groups.

Saudi Arabia

The number of coronavirus cases in Saudi Arabia topped 50,000 on Saturday, the health ministry said.

A ministry official reported 2,840 new cases, taking the cumulative total to 51,980. That was up from an average of around 1,500 new cases a day over the past week.

The death toll in the kingdom increased by 10 to 302, the official said on state TV.

Saudi Arabia recorded its first COVID-19 infection on March 2, several weeks after the initial outbreak in Asia.

Singapore

Singapore registered 682 more infections of the new coronavirus, its health ministry said on Sunday, taking the city-state’s total to 28,038 cases.

The vast majority of the newly infected people are migrant workers living in dormitories, the ministry said in a statement. Four are permanent residents.

South Korea

South Korea on Sunday reported five new domestic cases of coronavirus, all linked to a cluster of cases centred around bars and nightclubs in the capital which has raised fears in the country of a fresh wave of contagion.

After weeks of nearly no new domestic coronavirus cases, South Korea relaxed its lockdown on May 6, but a subsequent spike in infections linked to Seoul’s Itaewon nightlife neighbourhood forced a rapid re-think.

The government has stood by its decision to ease broader restrictions by reopening offices, public facilities and sports centres, but some nightclubs and bars in the capital were ordered to close again, and authorities have also delayed the planned reopening of schools by a week.

South Korea reported 13 new cases as of midnight Saturday, bringing the country’s total to 11,050 with 262 deaths.

Of those new cases, five were linked to the outbreak from the night spots in Seoul, and seven were people with the infection entering South Korea from abroad.

Turkey

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Saturday reported 1,610 new COVID-19 cases and 41 more deaths in Turkey.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country has climbed to 148,067 while the death toll surged to 4,096, Koca tweeted.

Turkey conducted 42,236 tests for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall number of tests carried out to 1,589,625, he stated.

In addition, 108,137 patients have recovered from COVID-19 since the outbreak, while 906 are being treated at intensive care units and 474 intubated, according to the minister.

Yemen

Yemen's health authorities on Saturday recorded 16 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total confirmed cases in the war-ravaged Arab country to 122.

According to a brief statement released by the country's supreme national emergency, during the past 24 hours, 16 new coronavirus cases were officially recorded including three new deaths, raising the total number to 122.

Meanwhile, the death toll from coronavirus climbed to 18 in different areas of the government-controlled provinces, including the southern port city of Aden and the southeastern province of Hadramout.

So far, the pro-government health authorities recorded only one recovery of all the infected patients since the outbreak of coronavirus on April 10.

Elsewhere in Yemen, health authorities in the Yemeni Houthi rebel-held capital Sanaa on Saturday declared two new COVID-19 cases in the areas under their control, taking the total number of infections in northern Yemen to four, including one death.
