HK median wage in May-June up 3.8% yoy

The median monthly wage of employees in Hong Kong in May to June 2019 was HK$18,200 (US$2,347), up 3.8 percent from the same period a year ago, latest government data shows.

The data on wages of employees excludes government employees as well as student interns, work experience students and live-in domestic workers, who are exempted by the minimum wage ordinance.

During this period, the median monthly wage of male employees was HK$19,900, up 4.1 percent year-on-year, the median monthly wage of female employees was HK$15,300, up 3.9 percent from the same time a year ago, according to Census and Statistics Department statistics released on Monday.

In May to June 2019, the 10th, 25th, 75th and 90th percentile monthly wages of Hong Kong employees were HK$10,000, HK$13,100, HK$28,200 and HK$44,600, respectively. They were 1 percent, 3.8 percent, 3.3 percent and 3 percent higher than the corresponding figures in May-June 2018, respectively.

The median hourly wage of employees in Hong Kong during this period was HK$73. This was 3.6 percent higher than the median of $70.5 in the same period of 2018. 

The 5th, 10th, 25th, 75th and 90th percentile hourly wages were HK$41, HK$43.9, HK$52.2, HK$114.9 and HK$186.2, respectively. 

In May to June 2019, the median hourly wage of male employees was HK$81 while that of female employees was HK$64.7. Analyzed by age group, the median hourly wage of employees aged 35-44 was the highest (HK$83.9), followed by employees aged 25-34 (HK$76.5) and those aged 45-54 (HK$74.6).
