Mainland reports zero increase in local COVID-19 cases

WUHAN/BEIJING - No new domestically transmitted cases of COVID-19 caused by a novel coronavirus were reported on the Chinese mainland on Sunday, Chinese health authorities said Monday.

The National Health Commission received reports of 39 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Sunday, all of which were imported.

Of them, 10 were reported in Beijing and Shanghai respectively, and six in the provinces of Fujian and Guangdong respectively. The provinces of Shandong and Gansu both reported two cases and the provinces of Zhejiang and Henan, and Chongqing Municipality each reported one. By the end of Sunday, 353 imported cases had been reported, said the commission.

Also on Sunday, nine deaths and 47 new suspected cases were reported on the mainland. All of the newly reported deaths were in Hubei province.

On Sunday, 459 people were discharged from the hospital after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 96 to 1,749.

The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 81,093 by the end of Sunday, including 5,120 patients who were still being treated, 72,703 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 3,270 people who died of the disease.

The commission said that 136 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

The commission added that 10,701 close contacts were still under medical observation. On Sunday, 661 people were discharged from medical observation.   

By the end of Sunday, 317 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 21 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 169 in Taiwan including two deaths.

A total of 100 patients in Hong Kong, 10 in Macao and 28 in Taiwan had been discharged from the hospital after recovery.

No new confirmed cases were reported Sunday in Wuhan for the fifth day, marking the fifth day in a row of zero increase as the former hardest-hit city recovers from the epidemic.

The health commission of Hubei, where Wuhan is the capital, said the central Chinese province also registered zero increase in new confirmed cases on Sunday. No new suspected cases were reported on Sunday as well.

The province also saw 447 patients discharged from hospital after recovery on Sunday. Among the 4,593 patients being treated in hospital, 1,343 were still in severe condition and another 371 in critical condition, according to the commission.

Hubei has so far reported a total of 67,800 COVID-19 confirmed cases, including 50,005 in Wuhan. The death toll in the province had reached 3,153.

The downtown of Wuhan remained a high-risk area for coronavirus, according to an evaluation by the provincial government on Sunday.

According to the risk-level evaluation, by midnight Saturday, Hubei had 75 cities and counties with low risks. Downtown Wuhan remained the only high-risk area. No medium-risk area was reported.

According to authorities, areas with no confirmed cases or with no new confirmed cases of infection for 14 consecutive days are considered low-risk areas, while those with more than 50 cases in total and outbreaks in 14 days are high-risk areas. Medium-risk areas are those with new cases in 14 days but no more than 50 cases in total, or those with more than 50 cases in total, but no outbreaks in 14 days.
