MADRID - FC Barcelona on Thursday confirmed the signing of striker Martin Braithwaite from Leganes on a deal that will keep him at the Camp Nou Stadium until the end of June 2024.

Barcelona paid the 18 million euros (approximately US$20 million) release clause on the contract of the 28-year-old Danish international, who has scored six goals in 24 appearances for Leganes this season.

"I am very excited and it is a dream come true," Braithwaite told the Barcelona official website.

"Anyone who plays football wants to play for Barcelona. My aim here is to win titles, it's a club with a lot of pressure and expectations," he added.

Barcelona have been allowed to sign Braithwaite even though the transfer window closed at the end of January, due to the tendon injury which will keep winger Ousmane Dembele out of action for the rest of the season.

However, even though Leganes were helpless to stop the departure of their top scorer as Barcelona paid Braithwaite's buyout clause, they will not be able to sign a replacement, which severely dents the club's hopes of avoiding relegation at the end of the season.
