Coronavirus: China reports 3,235 new cases, 64 new deaths

BEIJING/WUHAN - Chinese health authorities Tuesday said it received reports of 3,235 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection and 64 deaths on Monday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

All the new fatalities were in Hubei province, according to China's National Health Commission.

The overall confirmed cases on the mainland reached 20,438 by the end of Monday, the National Health Commission said, adding that 425 people had died of the disease

Besides the 64 deaths, Hubei's health authorities reported 2,345 new confirmed cases on Monday. 

In the provincial capital Wuhan, there were 1,242 new confirmed cases and 48 new deaths, whereas the cities of Xiaogan, Suizhou, Huanggang and Jingzhou reported 202, 183, 176 and 114 new confirmed cases, respectively, according to the Hubei Provincial Health Commission. Authorities discharged 101 patients from hospitals in the province on Monday.

Hubei had reported 13,522 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection by Monday, with 414 deaths and 2,143 cases in severe or critical condition. The province had seen 396 patients discharged from hospital after recovery.

The National Health Commission said there were 5,072 new suspected cases reported on Monday.

Also on Monday, 492 patients became seriously ill, and 157 people were discharged from hospital after recovery.

The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 20,438 by the end of Monday, the commission said, noting that a total of 425 people had died of the disease.

The commission added that 2,788 patients remained in severe condition, and 23,214 people were suspected of being infected with the virus.

A total of 632 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery.

The commission said 221,015 close contacts had been traced, adding that among them, 12,755 were discharged from medical observation on Monday, with 171,329 others still under medical observation.

By the end of Monday, 15 confirmed cases had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), eight in the Macao SAR and ten in Taiwan.
