Dominic Thiem through to Australian Open final

MELBOURNE - Austria's Dominic Thiem reached his first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open on Friday, beating German, Alexander Zverev, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4).

Thiem will now face Serbian Novak Djokovic on the final stage and by all accounts will be in for a fight, with Djokovic angling for his 8th Australian Open title.

The 26-year-old Austrian came from a set down to topple Zverev who was also in good form coming into the competition.

"Making the Australian Open final is unreal. What a start to the season so far," Thiem said in an on-court interview after the match.

Thiem beat tennis legend Rafael Nadal in an epic contest only two days earlier and will need to topple another master of the game if he is to claim his first Grand Slam title.

"It's not easy. I was playing four hours, 10 minutes against Rafa. I was in bed at 5 am a few days ago, it was not easy to recover," Thiem said.

He will face Novak Djokovic on Sunday evening local time.
