TAIPEI - Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Han Kuo-yu acknowledged his defeat in Taiwan's leadership election on Saturday evening.

Han's announcement means the reelection of Democratic Progressive Party candidate Tsai Ing-wen as Taiwan leader.

Wu Den-yih, meanwhile, announced resignation from the post of KMT chairman following Han's defeat.

Taiwan residents voted in the island's leadership and legislature elections on Saturday. Polls opened at 8 am and closed at 4 pm.

Each eligible voter cast one ballot for the leadership election and two ballots for the legislature election, one for a candidate representing the voter's electoral district and the other for a political party, according to the island's election commission.
