Ecologist explains how mangroves shield coastal cities from typhoons
Zhou Haichao, a researcher in the Ocean Research Center at the College of Life Sciences and Oceanography, Shenzhen University, highlighted the multifaceted role of mangrove ecosystems in providing coastal protection and highly efficient carbon sequestration. On Monday, the International Mangrove Center was officially inaugurated in Shenzhen, during a typhoon landfall that starkly emphasized the critical importance of mangroves in safeguarding coastal cities. Research reveals that mangroves possess a remarkable ability to sequester carbon at a rate four to eight times higher than terrestrial forests, making them a vital natural resource to combat global climate change and extreme weather events.
