“Hong Kong Good Take”, an online tourism guidebook that points out the city’s famous filming locations, was launched on Wednesday as parts of an effort to showcase the charm of the “Hollywood of the East” to global travelers and boost tourism.

The move responds to a call in the latest Policy Address, delivered by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu in mid-September, to support Hong Kong’s film industry and promote “film plus tourism”.

As a dedicate page under the official website of Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), the guide recommends 50 must-watch Hong Kong movies, from classic titles such as A Better Tomorrow to recent critical favorites like A Guilty Conscience and Cold War. Major filming locations are listed under the page of each title.

The guide also provides another way of exploration. It documents 100 filming locations and tells users in which movies they were featured.

For instance, the Temple Street Night Market in Yau Ma Tei was featured in the classic Hong Kong film C’est la Vie, Mon Cheri (That’s Life, My Dear). The West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade was seen in the South Korean drama Law and the City. The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, a must-visit on Hong Kong Island, was featured in the Hollywood blockbuster Batman: The Dark Knight.

The webpage also prepares thematic itinerates for movie fans, such as one featuring five filming locations in Sham Shui Po.

The online guidebook is part of a wider campaign launched by the HKTB to promote film-themed tourism offerings.

At a media briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said Hong Kong’s reputation as the “Hollywood of the East” has drawn many film and TV productions to the city.

Noting that many visitors come to know Hong Kong through films, which she called one of the most compelling ways to showcase the city’s appeal, Law expressed hope that the new guide will attract more tourists.

She added that the government will continue to promote film and TV-themed attractions, leveraging Hong Kong’s film culture to turn more iconic movie subjects into tourism experiences.

HKTB Chairman Peter Lam Kin-ngok said the new guide blends film culture with tourism experiences and believes it will unlock the potential of film tourism.

He said he looks forward to visitors stepping into the scenes they have seen on screen and experiencing Hong Kong’s unique charm as a place where East meets West, and old meets new.
