President Xi Jinping called on China and the United States on Thursday to translate their shared vision of a constructive relationship of strategic stability into action to deliver greater benefits to people in both countries and around the world.

Xi made the remarks when meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, DC.

He said the two countries should and fully can achieve mutual benefit through practical cooperation, help each other succeed through healthy competition, properly manage differences by seeking common ground, and build peace by strengthening mutual trust.

Noting that reciprocal visits by the two heads of state within less than six months were unprecedented in the history of China-US relations, Xi said he and Trump had maintained communication through various channels, jointly setting the course and steering the giant ship of China-US relations.

Their agreement in May to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability reflected both the realities of the relationship and their expectations for its future, Xi said, describing it as an important step toward finding the right way for the two countries to get along.

He urged both sides to turn that vision into action and strive to take their relationship to where cooperation is the mainstay, competition is kept within proper limits, differences are managed and peace can be expected.

Building such a relationship is neither a temporary expedient nor something that can be accomplished overnight, Xi said.

He called for action across government departments, sectors and levels, stressing the need to take even small positive steps, avoid even minor harmful actions, and work persistently to implement the consensus reached by the two sides.

The summit followed the eighth round of bilateral economic and trade consultations held recently in the US, during which the two sides reached consensus on multiple economic and trade issues and held their first dialogue on artificial intelligence under the bilateral economic and trade consultation mechanism.

During the talks, Xi said the new joint arrangements reached by the two countries’ economic and trade teams are good news for businesses and ordinary people in both countries, as well as for the global economy.

Cooperation is a two-way street, he said, adding that stable economic and trade relations require both lengthening the list of cooperation and shortening the list of issues.

Solutions can be found as long as both sides uphold equality, respect and reciprocity, Xi said. He expressed the hope that the two countries would meet each other halfway, remain committed to mutual benefit and keep economic and trade ties on a sound and steady course.

On artificial intelligence, Xi said that while China and the US compete in the field, they have even more reasons to cooperate.

As leading nations in AI, the two sides should leverage respective strengths in the sector rather than guarding against each other, he said.

The two sides can continue to engage in dialogue on AI, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and work together to prevent the misuse and abuse of AI, Xi said. The two sides should maintain human control over AI technologies, uphold a people-centered approach and the principle of using AI for good, and ensure that AI serves human progress, he added.

On the Taiwan question, Xi stressed that the Chinese side’s position on safeguarding national reunification and territorial integrity is clear-cut.

It is hoped that the US side will adhere to the correct position of opposing “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan question with caution, in order to lay a solid foundation for China-US strategic cooperation and the development of bilateral relations, Xi said.

According to a news release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Trump said that the state visit of Xi to the US is a great visit, and that both the US and China are great nations.

Trump said that he and Xi are good friends and that they maintain deep and close communication, and he expressed confidence that bilateral relations will be handled well under their leadership.

Noting the new outcomes achieved in the latest round of economic and trade consultations between the teams of both countries, Trump called on both sides to continue dialogue to reach better agreement.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on major international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula issue.

Xi said China has consistently maintained that the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected, and has played a constructive role in easing tensions while encouraging all parties to pursue peace and sustain the momentum of negotiations.

China supports the US and Iran in returning to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, he said.

Xi expressed hope that the two countries would resume efforts to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible, ultimately reach a comprehensive agreement covering the nuclear issue and other matters, and achieve peace at an early date.

The two leaders also confirmed that they would support each other in hosting the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in China in November and the G20 Leaders’ Summit in the US in December.

Speaking at a state dinner at the White House later on Thursday, Xi said that his sincere and in-depth talks with Trump had reached common understanding on many issues, adding new substance to the constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability and providing new strategic guidance for bilateral ties.
