Hong Kong’s fuel diversification strategy has strengthened the resilience of its energy supply system, offering practical insights for the Asia-Pacific region in responding to global energy market volatility and supply chain disruptions, said a power industry insider.

“Recent developments in the Middle East since March have rippled through the global energy system, as about 20 percent of global crude oil and a comparable share of natural gas are produced in the region. Energy-importing economies in the Asia-Pacific region have been especially hard hit,” Joseph Law Ka-chun, managing director of CLP Power Hong Kong, said in an interview last week.

Asia’s energy industry is entering a new phase, with geopolitical shifts posing new challenges to energy security, while the rapid development of artificial intelligence is driving a sharp increase in energy demand, he said.

“Hong Kong is in a relatively stable position in terms of energy security, thanks to its early adoption of a diversified and complementary energy strategy,” said Law. As a net energy importer, the city allocates its energy mix among various types, including natural gas, nuclear power, coal and others with natural gas alone sourced from three different regions.

Against this backdrop, Law believes Hong Kong can provide a reference for power companies and industry leaders across the Asia-Pacific region, paving the way for strengthening cooperation and enhancing regional energy security.

To promote such multilateral dialogue, CLP, as the president of the Association of the Electricity Supply Industry of East Asia and Western Pacific for 2026 and 2027, will host the AESIEAP CEO Conference from Sept 14 to 16, which is expected to draw more than 200 global power industry leaders to the special administrative region.

Under the theme “Transforming Energy with Intelligence”, the conference will focus on smart energy and the application of AI, digital and low-carbon technologies, while facilitating technical exchanges to promote greater connectivity among power systems across the Asia-Pacific region.
