A citywide cycling campaign in Hong Kong has set an ambitious target of clocking 1.2 million kilometers, equivalent to circling the globe 30 times, on stationary bikes over the coming four weeks to build momentum for the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, which falls on July 1, 2027.
Co-organized by Hong Kong Shine Tak Foundation and Sun Life Hong Kong, the “Ride To Shine HK” campaign invites people from all walks of life to collectively achieve this milestone, which symbolizes all Hong Kong residents welcoming the 30th anniversary, moving forward together with shared resilience and unity.
Starting Tuesday, 100 smart stationary bikes were placed at Salisbury Garden in Tsim Sha Tsui. The organizers will also deploy mobile promotional vehicles fitted with bikes to tour all 18 districts of Hong Kong, and other cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Participants can cycle on deployed bikes to accumulate mileage, or self-upload their records via an official website while cycling outdoors or indoors.

The campaign carries a dual message of unity and sustainability as the organizers said that the collective target of 1.2 million kilometers is equivalent to generating 6,011 kilowatt-hours of electricity – enough to power an electric vehicle for one full lap around the Earth.
As of 7 pm on Tuesday, participants had accumulated over 4,500 kilometers, according to the program’s official website.
“We invite everyone – professional cyclists and beginners alike to join this meaningful activity,” Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said at the launch ceremony on Tuesday. “If we are united and work towards the same goal, we will surely complete this challenge.”
Law said cycling has become deeply embedded in the daily lives of Hong Kong residents thanks to an expanding cycling track network, a proliferation of exercise bikes in fitness centers. She also praised Hong Kong cyclists’ international achievements.

Vowing that the special administrative region government will continue channeling resources into cycling to promote professionalization and wider public participation, Law emphasized the importance of corporate and community partners.
She commended Shine Tak Foundation and Sun Life Hong Kong for their long-standing contributions to local sports, including sponsorship of elite young athletic awards and basketball development programs, and called on more enterprises to follow their example.
