HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Observatory issued the amber rainstorm warning signal at 11:10 am on Monday, as a band of intense thundery showers moved into the region, bringing violent gusts and the threat of flooding.

Alongside the rainstorm signal, the observatory also issued a thunderstorm warning, which will remain in effect until 6:30 pm. The forecaster warned that severe squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

Authorities said that areas of intense thundery showers are currently affecting Hong Kong and the Pearl River Estuary. The observatory noted that whether the higher-level red rainstorm warning signal needs to be issued depends on the ongoing development of these thundery shower areas.
