
HONG KONG – Firefighter Kwok Ka-ming and ice-climbing athlete Kung Tsz-shan were crowned this year’s “bun queen and king” in a thrilling Sunday midnight final climaxing the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival.
Twelve finalists – nine men and three women – stormed a 14-meter bun tower to gather as many buns as they could within a three-minute time limit during the final round of the bun scrambling competition on the soccer field of the island’s Pak Tai Temple’s playground.

Kwok Ka-ming emerged as the “bun king” with 999 points, while Kwok Chun-yin and Wong Chi-kit were first and second runners-up, with 853 and 742 points, respectively.
Kung Tsz-shan won the “bun queen” with 760 points. With a total of 177 buns, Ma Hok-ming clinched the “Full Pockets of Lucky Buns” award.
The event attracted some 1,650 spectators who experienced the competition’s thrilling atmosphere.
Apart from the individual race, there was also an invitation relay in which three teams from Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Macao competed against seven local teams from Cheung Chau.
The competition was the climax of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival which falls on the eighth day of the fourth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
