Former media mogul Jimmy Lai Chee-ying was sentenced on Monday to 20 years in prison after his conviction for violating the Hong Kong SAR National Security Law.

The 78-year-old was found guilty on Dec 15 last year on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one of conspiracy to publish seditious materials.

Earlier, prominent community and business figures in Hong Kong had pressed for stiff penalties in accordance with the law, sending a clear message that illegal acts would be prosecuted and those endangering national security would face severe consequences.
