10 dead in explosion at Inner Mongolia steel plant

An explosion at a steel plant operated by Baogang United Steel in Baotou, Inner Mongolia autonomous region resulted in 10 deaths and 84 injuries, according to a statement released by the emergency response command center for the accident on Wednesday night.

All of the injured are currently in stable condition and authorities are now advancing the post-accident arrangements and a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.

The blast occurred at about 3 pm on Sunday. Emergency rescue teams from the national, regional, and municipal levels were immediately dispatched to the site.

After intensive search and rescue efforts — and subsequent verification by public security and health authorities — eight individuals previously reported as missing were confirmed to be dead, it added.
