Hong Kong's sea, land and air control points recorded a total of nearly 6 million trips during the Christmas holidays, according to the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

Immigration data on Monday showed that a total of 5,999,910 cross-border trips were recorded from Dec 24 until the end of the Christmas break yesterday.

The busiest day was on Christmas Day when immigration checkpoints logged 457,524 arrivals and 795,440 departures, or a total of 1,252,964 trips.

The data also showed arrivals by visitors from the Chinese mainland from Dec 24 to Dec 28 reached a total of 512,624, which is 11.4 percent higher than the 460,144 recorded during the same period last year.

The Immigration Department said last week that it expected an estimated 11.52 million cross-border trips during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
